I grew up in North Iowa, where I had many opportunities to explore the outdoors through running and gardening. These experiences lead to a curiosity about the natural world, and appreciation of its beauty that I hope to convey in my artwork, both fine art and illustration. While creating fine art, I seek to leave viewers with a greater sense of appreciation and curiosity about the natural world. For illustrations, I use field guides and other sources for inspiration and reference, so that the creatures I portray can be imagined living and breathing in a world like our own.
My process involves coming up with ideas and compositions in a sketchbook, then transferring a sketch to watercolor paper or illustration board. For some pieces I will use pen for a line drawing before adding watercolor paint, for others I will start with watercolor and add color pencil or gouache for finer details. I also enjoy trying other mediums such as acrylic paint or oil pastel, as it allows me to experiment with color and composition while creating a vibrant piece of artwork. Whether Iām depicting an imaginary creature, a backyard plant, or a scene invoking a memory of the Iowa countryside and places I visit, it is my goal to create artwork that brings joy and excitement to others.
